Formed in 1975 by George Strawbridge, the Rowdies won their only Soccer Bowl in their inaugural season beating Portland Timbers 2-0 in the Final with ex-Chelsea man Derek Smethurst netting an impressive 18 times in this season. Future Rowdies stars included Argentina’s Oscar Fabbiani and several British cult heroes such as Rodney Marsh (pictured), Frank Worthington and Clyde Best. In 1975, the NASL ran an indoor tournament entered by only four teams. The Rowdies finished second to the San Jose Earthquakes. The NASL did not hold an indoor season until 1979 when the Rowdies won the championship. The last NASL indoor season took place in 1983-1984 and the Rowdies finished last out of the seven teams.
